Sukanya, a seven-year-old girl attending a local government school, suffered from bilateral cataracts since birth and only had one-fifth of her normal vision. Her condition was first diagnosed when she was in the first grade after her parents took her to a local eye doctor.  However her parents could not afford the cost of surgery. Luckily, Nanna Kannu, a comprehensive Pediatric Eye Care Program from the Sankara Eye Foundation, came to her school. 

Sukanya was then referred to the Sankara Eye Hospital for an evaluation and within a week, her right eye was operated on. She admitted to being very anxious throughout the process, but hoped to have her left eye “fixed” as well. When asked about her experience with the surgery, Sukanya gave a “thumbs-up.”

Sankara Eye Foundation directly contributes to reducing poverty by helping people regain their eyesight. These valuable efforts help India's rural communities become more productive, earn their dignity, and combat social isolation by enhancing their quality of life.
